Reading for Pleasure
We believe that reading is a life skill that every child should be entitled to have. Without the ability to read and decode text, so much is closed off to a child and later as an adult. We want not only to inspire children through books but also to promote a love of reading to empower our children to become life -long readers. Books should not be seen as a chore but as a gateway to other worlds, the opening of our imaginations. Our aims for English are to provide a language rich environment that promotes a culture of reading and writing, where children develop a love of reading and are confident writers in all genres. During their time at Crowlees, pupils are exposed to a variety of texts which inspire, challenge and engage. We are very lucky to have a well-stocked library that children visit weekly; we have dedicated daily story time in each class; we prioritise reading for enjoyment during our daily Quiet Reading sessions and we regularly recommend books to our teachers and peers.
Early Reading
From Reception to Year 2 children take part in daily phonics lessons, that follow ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ validated scheme. (Click here for the overview). This teaches the children sounds and tricky words needed to support them with their early reading and writing. These children take home one book a week, which is linked to their phonics teaching/ability and another book from our core reading scheme.
Reading Scheme
Our core reading scheme is The Oxford Reading Tree.
